Our Very First Book Club Meeting!
Posted by Michelle Crosby on
Having cancelled the original book club meeting (scheduled for 19th July - officially the hottest UK day ever!) our first meeting finally took place on Tuesday 20th September.
A small group of us joined to discuss We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza and Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan.
We Are Not Like Them tells the story of Riley and Jen, best friends since childhood, they thought their bond was unbreakable - it didn’t matter to them that Riley is black and Jen is white.
When Jen’s husband, a Philadelphia police officer, is involved in the shooting of an unarmed black teenager and Riley, an up-and-coming reporter is assigned to the case, their relationship is tested to the limits.
Small Things Like These is short-listed for the 2022 Booker Prize and at only 128 pages is a short yet moving read. Set in a small Irish town in 1985, Bill Furlong prepares for Christmas with his wife and two girls but is forced to confront the reality of his upbringing and the secrets and silences of a people controlled by the Church.
Both books were popular choices with the group who would happily recommend them to friends.
